VA CPAP and sleep apnea benefits (2026)

3 min read By HHZ Editorial Next review

Veterans enrolled in VA health care, registered at a VA medical center, and prescribed a CPAP by a VA provider can order CPAP supplies free: online (if they've ordered within 2 years), by phone to the VA Denver Logistics Center, or by mail with VA Form 2346b. Supplies arrive in 7–10 days; reorder 30 days ahead. For a broken machine, contact your VA facility. For disability, sleep apnea is rated under 38 CFR 4.97 code 6847, with 50% when CPAP is required.

If you’re an enrolled Veteran, the VA can supply your CPAP and its parts at no charge. Here’s how it works, from VA.gov and the federal rating schedule.

Eligibility for free CPAP supplies

According to VA.gov, all of these must be true (VA: order medical supplies):

#Requirement

2Registered as a patient at a VA medical center
3Your VA provider prescribed the supplies or the CPAP machine

If you meet these, CPAP supplies are free of charge.

100%Chronic respiratory failure with carbon dioxide retention or cor pulmonale, or requires tracheostomy
50%Requires use of a breathing assistance device such as a CPAP machine
30%Persistent daytime hypersomnolence
0%Asymptomatic but with documented sleep-disordered breathing

VA and other coverage

You can have VA care and Medicare or other insurance, but they’re separate. VA CPAP supplies come through your VA prescription. If you buy outside the VA, compare CPAP without insurance and Medicare CPAP coverage.

Verdict

If you’re an enrolled Veteran with a VA CPAP prescription, use the VA’s free supply program: order online (if you’ve ordered in the last 2 years), by phone or by mail, and reorder 30 days ahead. Contact your VA facility for machine problems. For compensation, sleep apnea is rated under DC 6847, and requiring CPAP corresponds to 50% under the current schedule.

Yes, for enrolled Veterans whose VA provider prescribes one. VA.gov says that if your CPAP machine isn't working correctly, you should contact your local VA health facility, and your VA provider can order a new machine for you.
Are VA CPAP supplies free?
VA.gov says eligible Veterans can get CPAP supplies free of charge if they're enrolled in VA health care, registered as a patient at a VA medical center, and their VA provider prescribed the supplies or the CPAP machine.
How do I order CPAP supplies from the VA?
Online, by phone to the VA Denver Logistics Center, or by mail using VA Form 2346b (included with your last order). Online ordering is available only if you've ordered these supplies from VA within the past 2 years. Supplies should arrive in 7 to 10 days; reorder 30 days before you need more.
What VA disability rating is sleep apnea?
Under 38 CFR 4.97, diagnostic code 6847: 100% for chronic respiratory failure with carbon dioxide retention or cor pulmonale, or requiring a tracheostomy; 50% if it requires a breathing assistance device such as CPAP; 30% for persistent daytime hypersomnolence; 0% if asymptomatic with documented sleep-disordered breathing. Ratings rules can change, so check the current regulation.
