A dry, sticky mouth in the morning is one of the most common CPAP complaints. It’s fixable, and fixing it matters. If you are on Medicare, discomfort that stops you using the machine 4 hours a night can cost you coverage under the 90-day adherence rule.
Why it happens
| Cause | What’s going on | Main fix |
|---|---|---|
| Mouth breathing or mouth leak | Your mouth opens during sleep and pressurized air escapes through it | Chin strap (with a nasal mask or pillows), or a full face mask |
| Humidity too low | Dry air dries the mouth and throat | Raise the humidity level, or use heated tubing |
| Mask leak | Air escaping around the cushion dries the mouth and eyes | Refit or resize the mask; see mask leaks |
| Pressure set too high or too low | Can push you into mouth breathing | Ask your clinician to review your settings |

Fix 1: humidity and heated tubing
The AASM and ATS both put the humidifier first. Turn the heat or humidity setting up, and use heated tubing if your machine supports it.
On the ResMed AirSense 11, per its user guide:
- Humidity Level can be set to Off or 1–8, where 1 is the lowest setting. “If you are getting a dry nose or mouth, turn up the humidity.”
- Climate Control Auto, available with ClimateLineAir 11 heated tubing and the HumidAir 11 tub, is the default. It aims for a constant 85% relative humidity and sets the tube to 80°F (27°C).
- If the air feels too warm or cold, the tube temperature can be set from 60 to 86°F (16 to 30°C).
Turning humidity up too far can cause water droplets in the mask and tube, known as rainout. If that happens, see CPAP rainout.
Fix 2: stop air escaping through your mouth
If you use a nasal mask or nasal pillows, the AASM, ATS and ResMed all suggest a chin strap to keep your mouth closed. Medicare covers one chin strap (A7036) every 6 months as a PAP accessory (LCD L33718).
If a chin strap doesn’t work, switch to a full face mask that covers your nose and mouth. Our mask guide covers the ResMed AirFit F20 and F30i. More on chin straps, and why the evidence on mouth tape is weak, is in chin straps vs mouth taping.
Fix 3: symptom relief
The ATS lists artificial saliva gels, sprays and mouthwashes for mouth dryness, and saline spray or gel for nasal dryness. A dry nose often comes with a dry mouth. If your nose is blocked, you’ll breathe through your mouth, so treat nasal congestion as well.
Fix 4: check your pressure
Dry mouth that persists after you’ve fixed humidity and leaks is worth raising with your clinician. They can check your therapy data and settings and adjust the pressure if needed.
A step-by-step plan
| Night | Try |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | Raise humidity one step at a time. Use heated tubing or Climate Control Auto if you have it |
| 4–7 | If you use a nasal mask or pillows, add a chin strap |
| Week 2 | Still dry? Ask your supplier about a full face mask fitting |
| Any time | Use saline or artificial saliva for comfort. Raise persistent dryness with your clinician |
Verdict
Start with humidity: turn it up, or use heated tubing on Climate Control Auto. If you wear a nasal mask or pillows and still wake dry, add a chin strap. If that doesn’t work, move to a full face mask. Skip mouth tape unless your sleep clinician agrees. Fix dry mouth in the first weeks, while you’re building the habit.
